For many centuries, visual arts only had a minor role in Jewish culture. The emergence of Zionism, legacy of the Holocaust and the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948 created a new vision of Jewish Art. A unique and sometimes contradictory visual culture emerged, deeply rooted in Jewish religious, ethnic, historical and political experiences and traditions, and secular life.
