In this course, we will look at some of the most popular stories of all time – Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones – and see how these storytelling traditions have their basis in the European Epic. From video games to Netflix, these cultural archetypes from the Middle Ages still resonate strongly with our modern age. Drawing on sources such as JRR Tolkien’s scholarly essays, CG Jung’s work on Alchemy and European history, we will see how these stories keep the epic tradition alive.
