Teaching and learning for sustainable development in the 21st century What is Sustainable Development and how can we teach it?

Learning for Sustainability is an important key issue in the new school curriculum in Switzerland, the Lehrplan 21. In this seminar, we will look at different important key issues as well as at key principles for teaching sustainable development.

The debate on climate change is probably the most famous thematic focus within the discourse about sustainability but there are others of course. What are these issues and how are they treated with children and young adults? What are the newest trends in learning for sustainability, its resources and what is research contributing to practitioners in schools? In this seminar, we will look at different important key issues as well as at key principles for teaching sustainable development.

For this module, you will need to write a diary that covers the entire module. For each session, write half a page in which you reflect about the preparatory task, the content of the session as well as about what you take away for your own professional practice. Ideas for your own teaching should be included.

Present your summary in class (without PPT). This presentation will last 15 to 20 minutes.

Presentation of the diary: 

  • Word document with your name
  • Length: 6-7 pages 
  • Formatting: A4, Arial 10, standard margins.

Criteria for assessment:

  • Formal aspects: The formal criteria are fulfilled; the language used is comprehensible, concise and gender-neutral.
  • Scope: All questions are addressed adequately, and the diary is structured logically. Reference is made to the theory and the concepts discussed in the module.
  • Personal reflection: the personal reflection shows a good understanding of the different concepts discussed in the module, as well as an in-depth personal analysis thereof. 
  • Findings: The conclusion is well-argued and provides an original and innovative personal assessment.

Course contribution will be taken into account when fixing the final grade.
